Prof Martin Ugander
MD, PhD
Professor Martin Ugander, MD, PhD, FCSANZ is Professor of Cardiac Imaging and Director of Clinical Imaging at the University of Sydney, located in the Kolling Institute, Royal North Shore Hospital. He leads the University of Sydney Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Group (cmr.sydney.edu.au) and the Sydney Clinical Imaging Network (scin.net.au).
He received his MD in 2001 and PhD in 2006 from Lund University, Sweden. 2009-2011 he was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in Cardiovascular MRI and CT at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), USA. 2011-2019 he undertook clinical training in the physician specialty Clinical Physiology at Karolinska University Hospital, Stockholm, Sweden, where he also founded and led the Karolinska Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance Group at the Karolinska Institute.
He is widely published in experimental, translational, and clinical cardiovascular imaging methods across all major modalities with a focus on MRI, and has co-authored 134 publications, h-index 36, 3 patents, and has obtained $21M in career grant funding ($6M as main applicant). He has supervised the completion of 13 PhD students (6 as main) and 6 post docs, and currently supervises 11 PhD students (5 as main) and 4 post docs.
He currently serves in leadership roles in the Society for Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance (Science Committee), Cardiac Society of Australia and New Zealand (Imaging Executive), Australian Cardiovascular Alliance (Biomedical Engineering Flagship Advisory Board), Australia New Zealand Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance working group (Scientific Secretary), and is founder of the research spin-off startup Advanced ECG Systems Pty Ltd.
